Funding & Benefits — Living Care Collective
Funding & Benefits

Most families are leaving
money on the table.

British Columbia has more support for seniors than most families know about. We find what your family qualifies for — and make sure you're being charged the right amount for what you already use.

Almost every support available to a senior in BC is income-tested. What a client pays for home support, what their pharmacy deductible is, whether they qualify for a rebate or a tax credit — all of it depends on figures from their tax return.

We look for two things: programmes a client qualifies for but isn't receiving, and programmes they're already in that are charging the wrong amount. The second one surprises families most — overcharging is common after an income drop, after a spouse dies, or simply because nobody ever registered them in the first place.

BC & Federal programmes
What we check for every client

We run through this list as part of every Roadmap assessment and review it each spring after tax filing.

Fair PharmaCare
BC's income-based prescription drug coverage. Many seniors are either unregistered or placed in the wrong deductible tier — meaning they pay more than they should at the pharmacy.
Income-tested
Health Authority Home Support
Subsidized in-home care through your regional health authority. The daily rate is income-tested, and clients receiving the Guaranteed Income Supplement generally pay nothing.
Income-tested
Better at Home
Non-medical home support — housekeeping, transportation, friendly visiting — on a sliding-scale fee based on income. Run through local community organizations across BC.
Income-tested
Guaranteed Income Supplement & BC Seniors Supplement
Monthly federal and provincial top-ups for lower-income seniors receiving OAS. Requires annual tax filing to remain active — a missed filing year can pause payments entirely.
Income-tested
SAFER Rent Assistance
Monthly help with rent costs for low-to-moderate income BC seniors who rent their homes. One of the most underused programmes available.
Renters
Home Owner Grant & Property Tax Deferment
Annual grant reducing property tax, plus an option to defer remaining taxes interest-free until the property is sold. Available to qualifying BC homeowners 55 and older.
Homeowners
Disability Tax Credit & Medical Expense Tax Credit
Federal credits that can meaningfully reduce income tax for seniors with significant impairments or medical expenses. The DTC also unlocks the Registered Disability Savings Plan.
Federal
Canada Caregiver Credit
A federal tax credit for family members who support a dependent with a physical or mental impairment. Often overlooked by families who don't realize they qualify.
For families
BC Rebate for Accessible Home Adaptations
A rebate for low-to-moderate income homeowners or landlords who make accessibility modifications — grab bars, ramps, widened doorways — to support aging in place.
Home adaptation
Veterans Independence Programme
Federal support for veterans and, in some cases, their surviving spouses — covering home maintenance, grounds keeping, and personal care to support independent living.

Already using some of these? We check the math.

It's common for seniors to be enrolled in a programme but paying more than their income says they should. This happens after a spouse dies, after retirement reduces income, or simply because nobody ever updated the file.

When we find an overcharge, we put a reassessment request on your 90-Day Action Plan — with a named owner and a clear done-condition — and tell you plainly what it's likely worth.

What we do — and what we don't

Review your income documents to check eligibility and fees
Identify every programme your family member qualifies for
Prepare and submit funding applications on your behalf
Flag overcharges and request reassessments
Review documents and return them the same day — we don't keep financial papers by default
Refresh the assessment each spring after tax filing
Handle your money, banking, or CRA login details
Advise on investments, gifting, or estates — those belong with a licensed advisor
